Pope Francis
There has been much written about the passing of the Pope and the impact that he had in his reign. He was a genuine person of peace and unity and respect.
As we read this Newsletter the Conclave has commenced to work out a replacement Pope. We pray that their work is fruitful, and the correct choice is made.
Wonderful ANZAC Day Celebrations
Anzac Day is such an important time in our country. To remember, celebrate and pay respects to those who served our country to allow us to have what we do today. In the following pages you will see how the school worked with the local communities and also had its own celebration.
We were privileged, at the school assembly, to welcome our guests from the Warilla RSL sub-Branch and the Albion Park RSL, thank you.
Lest We Forget
At Corpus Christi we focus on quality education and peaceful relationships. This takes some hard work and a bit of focus to achieve. But is so worth it in today’s society where spur of the moment and sometimes thoughtless actions seem to become the norm.
So, I was devastated to read of the continuing loss of life and lack of care shown by humans to humans. When will this stop? We give thanks for the society that we have in Australia, not perfect, but so much better than so many other places.
Mothers Day
I wish all mothers a wonderful day on Sunday and hope that you get spoilt. You deserve it. The role of motherhood is seriously underestimated in the current world.
Mothers hold a unique and irreplaceable role in our lives, shaping the very foundation of our families and communities. Their love, sacrifice, and guidance nurture not only the emotional and physical well-being of their children but also help instil values that ripple through generations. As caregivers, teachers, and protectors, mothers offer strength in times of hardship and joy in moments of triumph. Their unwavering presence and boundless support often go unspoken, yet they are the quiet force behind countless successes and enduring resilience.
As we approach Mother’s Day, it’s a time to reflect on and honour the immeasurable impact mothers have on the world. Whether biological, adoptive, or chosen, mothers help build societies by raising thoughtful, compassionate individuals. In a rapidly changing world, their role remains a constant source of stability, empathy, and hope. Celebrating them is more than a tradition—it is a recognition of their enduring influence and a reminder to value the love that so often shapes our very humanity.
A Glimpse into The Heart of God...
Life is not an exercise to be endured. It is a mystery to be unfolded. Life comes from the living of it, from the attitudes we bring to it and the understandings we take away from each of the moments that touch our own. The truth is that life is the only commodity each of us actually owns. It is the only thing, in the universe over which we have any real control whatsoever, slim as that may be.
It is a busy world. A frightfully busy world. It is the kind of world that consumes us, drains our soul, dries out our hearts, damps our spirits, and makes living more a series of duties than a kind of joyful mystery. We find ourselves spending life too tired to garden, too distracted to read, too busy to talk, too plagued by people and deadlines to organise our lives to reflect on our futures, to appreciate our present. We simply go on, day after day after day.
Where is what it means to be human in all of that? Where is God in all of that? How shall we ever get the most out of life if life itself is our greatest obstacle to it?
Joan Chittister - CONTEMPLATION IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS
God bless
Mr Wayne Marshall
Principal
A very warm welcome back to all our students, families, and staff as we begin Term Two. We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break and are feeling refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning and growth at Corpus Christi.
This term, we also acknowledge the recent passing of Pope Francis. A significant figure globally, Pope Francis championed values of compassion, justice, and care for the vulnerable. His calls for environmental stewardship and a more equitable world resonated with many, including within our own school community. As we reflect on his legacy, let us consider how we can continue to live out these expectations within our school environment, fostering kindness, supporting one another, and taking responsibility for the world around us.
As we settle back into our routines, it's a timely moment to remind ourselves of the core values that underpin our school community. We believe that a positive and productive learning environment is built upon a foundation of respect - respect for ourselves, respect for others, respect for learning, and respect for our environment.
Respect for Self: This means taking pride in our personal presentation, striving to do our best in all our endeavors, and looking after our physical and mental well-being. We encourage all students to be organised, punctual, and to take responsibility for their learning journey.
Respect for Others: Our school is a diverse and inclusive community, and it is vital that we treat everyone with kindness, empathy, and understanding. We value different perspectives and celebrate the unique contributions each individual brings. Bullying and disrespectful behavior have no place here, and we encourage students to speak up if they see or experience anything that goes against our values.
Respect for Learning: We are all here to learn and grow. This means actively participating in lessons, being attentive and engaged, and valuing the efforts of our teachers and peers. Creating a focused and supportive learning atmosphere is a shared responsibility.
Respect for the Environment: Our school grounds and the wider world are spaces for which we must offer care. This includes keeping our classrooms and communal areas tidy, using resources responsibly, and being mindful of our impact on the environment. Let's all do our part to ensure our school remains a clean and sustainable place.
We have a busy and exciting term ahead, filled with opportunities for learning, growth, and connection. We look forward to working in partnership with you to ensure a successful and fulfilling term for all our students. Wishing you all a wonderful Term Two.

A Tribute to Pope Francis
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” – Matthew 5:9
It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. A spiritual father to over a billion Catholics around the world, Pope Francis led the Church with humility, compassion, and courage.
A Brief Outline of His Life
- Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- Ordained a Jesuit priest in 1969 and became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998.
- Created a cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II.
- Elected Pope on 13 March 2013, becoming the first Jesuit Pope, the first from the Americas, and the first to take the name Francis—after St Francis of Assisi, a symbol of peace and care for the poor.
- Known for his deep concern for the marginalised, care for the environment (Laudato Si’), and his efforts to reform the Church with a focus on mercy and inclusion.
Pope Francis will be remembered for his accessible and heartfelt teachings, his tireless work for justice and peace, and his unwavering call to “go to the peripheries” reaching out to those most forgotten by the world.
A Prayer in Remembrance
Loving God,
We give thanks for the life, leadership, and witness of Pope Francis.
In his simplicity and strength, he taught us to see Christ in the poor, to care for creation, and to walk humbly with our God.
May he now rest in the embrace of Your eternal love.
May his legacy continue to inspire us to be people of mercy, hope, and courage.
Grant comfort to all who mourn, and raise up leaders who will continue to shepherd Your people with wisdom and grace.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen
St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal Term 2 Initiative
As followers of Christ, we are challenged to make a preferential option for the poor as it is important to create conditions for marginalised voices to be heard, to defend the defenceless, and to assess lifestyles, policies and social institutions in terms of their impact on the poor. The St Vincent de Paul Society is committed to actively and passionately speaking out against the causes of poverty and inequality on behalf of the people we serve. Please watch the video attached on the excellent work St Vincent de Paul does in the community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeVC8I65wSs
In term two each House is asked to donate items to the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.
- Items that the students from Ingham, Chisholm, Davis and Deane could bring in include: Beanies, Scarves, Socks, Gloves or Blankets and Jumpers.
- Senior students are to donate hygiene items for the Social Justice Committee to organise hygiene packs.
Students are to place their items for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal in their learning circle baskets.
Thank you for supporting the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.

For any parent who has watched the Netflix drama Adolescence and was left highly disturbed by the harmful impact that social media is having on young men and boys, you are not alone.
It’s hard to think of a show that has captured the world’s attention so fully and shone a much-needed light on the dangerous impact of misogynistic content, algorithms and influencers on the minds of young men and boys.
Shockingly, despite our best efforts as parents to raise great kids, it is not a fair fight when tech companies and algorithms can influence our teenagers within seconds.
As Australia’s national online safety educator, nothing is more important to us than ensuring young people are safe to create, connect and explore the wonders of technology and the internet.
It’s what motivates us in every aspect of our work, whether we’re connecting with educators, parents and yo

Artificial Intelligence and Academic Integrity
At the beginning of Term 2, Stage 4 students will be taking part in explicitly taught lessons on academic integrity - lessons that help them understand how to use information honestly, think critically, and give credit where it’s due. Year 8’s lessons are embedded in their normal History sessions, while Year 7 will take part in a project in Week 4 on their non-camp days.
Why is this so important now? We’re living in a world where artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of everyday life, not just for adults, but for teenagers too. As AI tools become smarter, it’s never been more important for young people to develop strong ethical thinking and human judgment. AI expert and educator Ethan Mollick puts it, students need to “Be the human in the loop.” In other words, while AI can help us do many things, from writing, researching and even problem-solving, we still need humans to ask the right questions, make good decisions, and guide how these tools are used. This is what we’re preparing students for.
By starting with lessons on academic integrity, we’re laying the foundation for a bigger conversation: How can we use AI as one more educational tool responsibly, safely and wisely? Later this year, students will build on these skills in dedicated AI digital literacy sessions, where they’ll learn to work with AI safely and ethically, not rely on it. In a time when it’s becoming increasingly easy to let technology do the thinking for us, we’re committed to helping our students become thoughtful, ethical and informed learners ready for the future.
We’d Love Your Input on AI and Digital Learning at Corpus Christi
As we continue exploring how best to prepare students for a future with AI, we want to make sure our approach also reflects your knowledge, concerns and hopes. We're considering hosting a parent information evening later this year to share how AI is being introduced in the classroom and to hear your thoughts.
To help us plan, please take a moment to fill out this short survey. It’s not an RSVP, just a way to see if there’s interest. The form also includes space for you to ask questions or share feedback about AI and digital learning at Corpus Christi. All questions are optional, and every response will help us shape a more informed approach.
Thank you for being part of the conversation.

HSC Minimum Standards in Week 3
New minimum standards in literacy and numeracy were introduced in 2018 in NSW for the HSC 2020 and beyond. All students in NSW need to meet this minimum standard by sitting short online tests in reading, writing and numeracy.
The HSC Minimum Standard was introduced to help ensure students leave school with basic literacy and numeracy skills for success in life, and that students will be able to communicate their ideas effectively in the HSC exams. Regardless of students’ plans beyond school, they will need adequate reading, writing and numeracy skills.
All students will all have the opportunity to sit their HSC exams; however, they will need to demonstrate the new minimum standard in reading, writing and numeracy in order to be awarded their HSC certificate.
There will be multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate the standard between now and when they complete the HSC, starting this term for students in Year 10. The short online tests will take place at school and students will have multiple opportunities a year (if needed) to pass them in Years 10, 11, and 12. Students will also be able to take them for up to five years after starting their first HSC course.
Year 10 at Corpus Christi will have their first opportunity for 2025 on the following dates this term:
- Monday, May 12 - Writing
- Tuesday, May 13 - Reading
- Wednesday, May 14 - Numeracy
They will, if required, have further opportunities later in the year.
For more information, you can visit https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard
There is no specific study required for the tests but if students would like to prepare, they can do the following:
- Go to the Literacy website at https://sites.google.com/dow.catholic.edu.au/literacy/home and search for the videos that address an area they would like to work on.
- Google: “HSC minimum standards sample test questions” to have a go at some sample test questions.
If you have any questions, please email me at dysonc01@dow.catholic.edu.au.

Throughout Term 1, our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders played a vital role in welcoming and supporting our newest Year 7 students. The Peer Support Program began on the first day of school, with friendly check-ins, ice-breaker activities and a tour of the school that helped ease nerves. Each week or fortnightly Peer Support Leaders met with Year 7 to complete structured sessions focusing on key aspects of high school success, such as building safe and respectful relationships, creating support networks, and developing resilience. Students explored what it means to thrive in high school, with engaging activities on decision-making, challenges, and respectful behaviour. Later in the term, support was offered in assessment preparation and organisation – a timely and valuable resource as students navigated their first formal assessment tasks. The final session provided space for reflection, gratitude, and a look ahead at new opportunities.

Workplacement Year 11 VET Students
A representative from Workplace Learning Illawarra will be visiting Corpus Christi on Monday, 13 May, to speak with all year 11 VET students.
This is a crucial session designed to equip students with all the information they need to have a successful and rewarding workplacement experience. The representative will cover several key areas, including:
- The workplacement procedure: Gain a clear understanding of the steps involved in the workplacement process.
- What to expect during workplacement: Get insights into the typical day-to-day activities and expectations in a workplace setting.
- Your rights and responsibilities: Learn about your entitlements and obligations as a workplacement student.
- Q&A session: This is your chance to ask any questions you may have about workplacement directly to the expert.
Workplace Learning Illawarra plays a vital role in sourcing host employers for our students, providing valuable connections with local businesses and industries. However, if students have a particular host employer in mind, they are welcome to source their own workplacement. If students choose this option, please ensure they inform the school at least 6 weeks prior to the commencement of work placement. This timeframe allows us to complete the necessary paperwork and assess the suitability of the proposed host employer to ensure a positive and safe learning environment for you.
Please note the scheduled workplacement dates for Year 11 Corpus Christi VET students
Term 3
- Week 3: August 4th to August 8th (Backup: Week 4, August 11th to August 15th)
Term 4
- Week 2: October 20th to October 24th (Backup: Week 4, November 3rd to November 7th)
It is important to remember that workplacement is a mandatory component of all VET courses. This hands-on experience is an integral part of learning, providing students with practical skills and real-world insights that will complement their classroom studies and enhance their future career prospects.
Make sure your student attends the session with Workplace Learning Illawarra on May 13th in session 5. It's a fantastic opportunity to get all the information students need and feel confident as they prepare for this important stage of their VET journey. I have also attached an information booklet for parents and carers.

We have an increasing number of students presenting to the office to sign out with no note in Compass for them to leave. If you require your child to leave early for a planned appointment or other reason this should be entered in Compass before the departure day and time. If there is a note in Compass the student can come down and sign out through the office.
If you are unable to access Compass a parent or nominated emergency contact will need to come in and sign your child out.
Unwell Students
Information for Illness/Misadventure for assessments or tasks is in your child's Compass.

Students Exiting the School in the Afternoon
Due to safety concerns, students are not to exit the school grounds in the afternoon through the glass foyer. All students are required to use the walking path around to the drop-off bay or Moore Street exit. The only exceptions are any disabled students or students with an injury.
Traffic Movement, Parking and Afternoon Student Pick-up
A reminder to parents about double-parking and blocking traffic flow before and after school. This INCLUDES ON THE SCHOOL GROUNDS. Cars are to keep moving through the kiss and drop area. If there are no spots available. Please do not stop and block the traffic flow.
Please be aware that hefty fines apply for these offenses and consideration of the local businesses and the safety of students is paramount.
Senior students and families are reminded to follow the rules when parking near and around the school grounds and to be considerate of the neighbours.
