Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
I warmly welcome all back to the 2025 academic school year. I trust that all had a pleasant holiday break and spent it with friends and family. I am extremely proud to be taking over as the Acting Principal of this wonderful school.
It was wonderful to be received so well by the Staff and students. I was at Corpus for four weeks in Term 4 last year when Mr Muscat was on leave. Many of the students remembered me and went out of their way to say hello.
I would like to introduce myself to all a little further. I grew up in western Sydney and started teaching at Marist Brothers Auburn. I was Assistant Principal in three secondary Colleges in Sydney over 14 years and Principal for one year at Patrician Brothers College, Fairfield before moving to the Principal’s role at Mount Carmel Catholic College and then John Therry Catholic College and then St John the Evangelist, Nowra. I look forward very much to getting to know you and your children.
There are also a number of other Staff commencing at Corpus Christi this year and we warmly welcome then into our community.
- Madeline Brooks – English
- Kye Muscat – Maths
- Shaun Perera – Maths
- Natasha Stephens – HSIE
- Isabelle Tannous – English
- Ben Anderson – HSIE
- Sheree Hughes – Maths
- Annie Farrugia – DLN
- Julie Landon - EALD
- Melissa Loudoun – PDHPE (PDHPE Coord from St Benedict’s on professional swap for 2025)
I would like to invite all parents to consider attending the P&F meetings. This group is advisory and not fund raising and aids me in understanding the needs of the school and be better able to implement initiatives and make changes. The first Parents and Friends meeting of 2025 is on Wednesday 19 February from 7.00pm – 8.00pm.
The first few weeks have flown by and officially we have completed two. The first week was the Staff day only so this week has been a full one and most exciting. I always enjoy the energy of seeing the students catch up with friends and sharing holiday stories.
I have attended the Swimming Carnival, had the Opening School Mass, had the Year 7 Technology Bootcamp and Pastoral days and visited St Pius X, St Francis of Assisi, St John’s, Ss Peter and Paul, St Paul’s, St Patricks, Stella Maris and Nazareth and had a meeting with Fr Joseph.
As we move through the next few weeks we prepare ourselves for Ash Wednesday (5 March) and the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday focusses our mind and heart on repentance, prayer and alms giving and is symbolised by the ‘ashing’ of a cross on our foreheads. The Priest will say ‘turn away from sin and stay faithful to the Gospels’ or ‘ from dust we come and from dust we will return’.
I thank the Staff and students for being so welcoming and look forward to 2025.
God bless
Mr Wayne Marshall
Principal
Firstly a thank you for the warm welcome I have received from students and staff. It is evident the Corpus Christi community has a deep commitment to developing the faith, learning and well-being of every student.
This year our school will be increasing its emphasis on Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L). This Diocesan mandated framework is a crucial way in which we bring together faith, learning and well-being in our Catholic school. Students, staff and parents all have a part to play in PB4L, ensuring we are on the same page to create a positive and supportive learning environment for everyone at Corpus Christi Catholic High School. The initial focus areas for our PB4L team will be:
- Attendance - arriving to school on time and ready to learn, and maximising student learning opportunities during class time.
- Playground Expectations - including an emphasis upon expected behaviours at the canteen.
- Uniform - student voice project, accountability.
A reminder about policies and expectations in the following areas (as outlined in our student handbook):
Attendance
Attendance expectations at Corpus Christi are aligned with Diocesan Policy and Procedure and emphasise the partnership between school and home. All staff are involved in supporting regular attendance and LCLAs play a key role in communication with families in regards to attendance patterns and concerns. House Coordinators facilitate time during pastoral team meetings to review and assess attendance data.
Families will consult the CEDoW Attendance Policy and CEDoW Attendance Procedure to ensure they meet legislative requirements, especially concerning absences and planned leave.
Responsible Use of Technology
At the commencement of each school year students and their parents make a renewed commitment to uphold the CEDoW Responsible Use of Technology Agreement.
In 2023, the NSW Government banned the use of mobile phones in its schools. This legislation supports the enforcement of Corpus Christi’s zero-tolerance toward student mobile phone use. Students breaching this expectation will be directed to Student Services to place their phones away safely until 3:00pm.
Airpods/earphones are also not to be used unless in the context of a classroom activity (as directed by a Learning Advisor).
Thank you for your continued partnership in building a positive school community.

Pilgrims of Hope: Embracing Presence in the Jubilee Year
As we embark on the journey of the Jubilee Year 2025, we are invited to embrace the theme "Pilgrims of Hope." A Jubilee is a time of renewal, reflection, and recommitment to our faith, calling us to be people of hope—hope in Christ, hope for our communities, and hope for the future. This theme resonates deeply with our school’s focus for the year: being present—to God, to ourselves, and to those around us.
At Corpus Christi, we strive to cultivate a spirit of presence in our daily interactions, fostering a community where each individual feels seen, valued, and supported. Being present means more than simply showing up; it calls us to actively engage with one another, listen deeply, and respond with compassion.
Throughout this year, we have witnessed moments of profound presence within our school community. Students have demonstrated presence in their commitment to social justice initiatives, such as supporting the Winter Appeal, Project Compassion, and the Christmas Appeal. Through these acts of service, they have embodied the essence of pilgrimage—walking in faith, bringing hope to those in need, and deepening their connection with others.
Our liturgical celebrations and retreats have also provided opportunities to be present to God, allowing students and staff to pause from the busyness of life and reflect on their personal faith journey. Moments of stillness in prayer, communal worship, and the simple act of sharing stories have strengthened our collective spiritual journey as Pilgrims of Hope.
In the classroom, we see students and staff demonstrating presence through engaged learning, open discussions, and the courage to ask difficult questions. By being fully present to their studies, they embody the call to grow more fully into the likeness of Christ. Teachers, in turn, model presence by guiding and supporting students, ensuring that each young person is known and nurtured.
As we continue through this Jubilee Year, may we walk forward as Pilgrims of Hope—committed to being truly present to our faith, to one another, and to the wider world. May our journey be one of renewal, joy, and deepened connection with Christ, who walks with us always.
Welcome Year 7: Beginning the Journey at Corpus Christi
A warm welcome to our newest members of the Corpus Christi Catholic High School community—our Year 7 students! Beginning high school is an exciting milestone, filled with new opportunities, friendships, and experiences. As you step into this new chapter, know that you are supported by a school community that is here to guide and encourage you every step of the way.
At Corpus Christi, we are called to “Abide in Christ” and live out our core values of Presence, Humility, Courage, and Service. This year, our focus on being present reminds us to embrace each moment—whether in the classroom, on the sporting field, or during our times of prayer and reflection. Being present means showing up with an open heart, forming genuine connections, and making the most of the opportunities ahead.
Already, our Year 7 students have embraced this theme through their Year 7 Welcome Day, orientation activities, and House spirit events. These experiences have helped them settle in, meet their peers, and build confidence as they navigate their new school environment.
To our Year 7 students—this is just the beginning of an incredible journey. Over the coming years, you will grow academically, spiritually, and personally, discovering your strengths and passions along the way. We encourage you to get involved, ask questions, and always seek support when needed.
To our Year 7 families—thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. We look forward to working together to nurture and support their learning and wellbeing.
Welcome to the Corpus Christi family—where you will find friendship, faith, and a place to belong.

Bishop Brian Mascord - Visitation To All Saints Catholic Parish
Bishop Brain Mascord will be visiting All Saints Parish from Friday 28 March 2025 to Sunday 30th March 2025. The aim of Bishop Brian’s visit is to help All Saints Catholic Parish to look at itself and to make an assessment on:
- Where our parish is going
- How we are translating our basic evangelising thrust as disciples of Jesus in to action
- What we as a parish have achieved and are doing well, also
- What we are not doing
- What needs are confronting us in our parish
- How we can best use all the talents, resources, goodwill and generosity that already exists in our parish community
We are looking forward to Bishop Brian visiting our wonderful parish and community at Mass on Saturday 29th March at 5.00 pm and Sunday 30th March at 9.00 am.
I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce the Mission Team for 2024. This year Ms. Skye Murray will hold the role of Assistant Leader of Mission. This will see her looking after areas of Social Justice and Curriculum throughout the community. Joining Ms Murray in the Mission Team will be Ms Kristin Ciccone and Ms Sarah Beckett, who once again will hold the position of Youth Ministry Leader and Facilitator of the Wollongong Environmental Network respectively. I welcome them to the Mission Team once again and look forward to working with them throughout the year. All students should keep an eye out for upcoming Mission team meetings via compass.

Student Leaders 2025
Congratulations to the following students on their appointment to the 2025 Student Leadership Team. The school community is looking forward to the many initiatives they will implement throughout the year.
Class Change Requests - Years 7-10
Congratulations to our students on a very positive start to the year. Students have settled well into their classes, are engaged and eager to participate in learning activities. However, there have been some requests by students and parents to change classes. It is a very rigorous process placing students into classes and all of the academic and pastoral needs are taken into consideration when finalising class lists. Whilst we understand that students would like to be in classes with their friends, it is essential that learning is the priority. It becomes very difficult to move students due to classes being at capacity and the structure of the school timetable. If you have any serious concerns regarding your child’s placement, then please contact your child’s Learning Circle Learning Advisor or House/Year Leader so they can discuss with you some appropriate strategies and supports to assist your child in navigating their current learning environment.
Peer Support Program
Our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders recently kicked off our Peer Support program to help Year 7 students settle into high school. On the first day of school, Year 7 participated in a range of icebreaker activities, discussed school values, set group goals such as promoting kindness and confidence at school, and explored what it means to be a successful student. Activities like “Would You Rather” and a school tour helped Year 7’s bond, navigating their new environment, and feeling welcomed into our school community. Year 7 will participate in the program for the duration of Term 1, focusing on respectful relationships, resilience and belonging in our school community.
Some quotes from Year 7 about the program so far:
“Peer Support has taught me to remember important teachers names” - Yasmin & Amelia
“We have learnt about positive friendship qualities” - Sadie
“I have learnt to be kind to all” - Jaxx
“Peer Support has taught me how to respect my peers more” - Benji
“I have learnt teamwork with my group” - Sean
“Peer Support has shown me locations around the school” - Levi
A big thank you to our Student Leadership and Peer Support Coordinator Ms Brooke Brady for facilitating this important initiative.

We also celebrated Andrew Murphy’s achievement of attaining and ATAR of 99.2. Andrew addressed the school. His speech is attached below.
Good morning everyone. My name is Andrew, and apparently, I did something right last year because I’ve been invited back to give this speech. But seriously, being awarded dux is definitely an honour, and it represents years of hard work and focus, but also a reflection of the support I had from my teachers, friends, and family.
First off, a huge thank you to my family. To my parents—thank you for the endless love, support, and reminding me to finish my assignments at least 17 times a day. And a special thanks to my older sister Sally, who deserves all the credit for helping me with assignments and letting me steal her notes since day one. Honestly, I’m probably here today because of her guidance.
To my teachers Mr Bellhouse, Mr Ryan, Mr Dyson, Mr Hancock, Ms Brady, Mr Hiser, and every teacher who has taught me at Corpus—thank you for believing in me, for pushing me when I needed it, and all the extra hours you put in to help me succeed. Students: trust your teachers. They’re here to help you, even when it feels like they’re just piling on homework. Teachers want you to succeed. When they hit you with, ‘You’re going to need this for the HSC,’ trust me—you should probably listen.
If you haven’t listened to anything I've said, at least pay attention to this. This is my top advice on how you ‘lock in and become an academic weapon’.
- Make the most of class time and study sessions. Be productive in the time you’re given—it saves you stress later.
- Don’t pretend to study. Actually Study. Stay off your phone, no more Tetris, Wordle, or watching football highlights on YouTube. Trust me, Messi will still be the GOAT when you finish your homework.
- Eat before exams. This is really important. You don’t want to be sitting there thinking about a meat pie while trying to remember your English quotes. Also, food helps your brain run faster.
- Actually complete assignments, homework, and assessments—and do them early. These aren’t just chores; they help you succeed in the long run.
- Find a routine and create study habits that work for you. Whether it's mind maps, active recall, or maybe just maybe 2 cans of redbull on a sunday night (just kidding… sort of).
It’s never too late to start. I can’t stress this enough. I saw this Chinese proverb on instagram reels that read, ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but the second-best time is now’. Start studying, catch up on your content, and lock in.
Balance is key too. You can hit the books and still hit the dance floor. Or what my Dad says, ‘Party hard, but study harder’. Hang out with your friends, go to the gym, play sports, and have rest days. It’s all about balance, trust me. Just make sure you don’t “balance” a one thousand word essay at 11:59pm the night before its due.
Now, I have to give a massive thank you to my friends. Honestly, you guys made school bearable and actually fun. From lunchtime football games to AirPlaying Blackjack on the classroom TV, there was never a dull moment. Special shoutout to my guys Riley Tobar and Andrew Dixon—we had every class together, and I couldn't have done it without you.
Before I wrap this up, I want to leave you with a bit of inspiration. I came across this Kanye West lyric: 'Reach for the stars, so if you fall, you land on a cloud’. Now, I’m not saying take all your life advice from Kanye, but he has a point. Dream big, put in the effort, and even if you don’t hit the target every time, you’ll still be better off than where you started.
So, enjoy high school. Make memories. Go out, have fun, but also chase the bag and work hard. Remember, it’s not too late to turn things around if you need to. Trust your teachers, trust yourself, and, most importantly, discipline yourself while finding a healthy balance.
Finally, remember that anything is possible. If the Lebron and the Cavs can come back from 3-1 down in the NBA finals, you can ace your exams. Thanks everyone, and good luck with whatever comes next.
Thank you.

Dr Aidan Johnson
Leader of Curriculum and Improvement
Dear Students, Parents, and Carers,
We would like to address some recent inquiries regarding class groupings by providing clarification on the selection process and structure.
The Cluster Class (Group A) is determined based on classroom performance and external assessments, including CoGAT, NAPLAN, and PAT.
Groups B to G are mixed-ability classes and are not streamed. These groupings are carefully arranged based on pastoral considerations and student dynamics to create an optimal learning environment for all students. Mathematics classes have some extra structures for extension and support in year 9 and 10.
At Corpus Christi we are committed to high academic expectations and building resilience. All classes will focus upon developing students’ growth mindset, nurturing positive attitudes, teamwork and collaborative practices. Students are encouraged to work beyond their comfort zone and strive for constant improvement.
We hope this information clarifies the class structure at Corpus Christi and alleviates any concerns as we begin the new academic year.

Literacy at Corpus Christi in 2025
The year ahead is an exciting one for literacy at Corpus Christi, including the return of The Vocab Lab and the introduction of a new approach to sentence structure. It’s also not long until NAPLAN. This article will also detail the school’s plan for HSC Minimum Standard testing in Term Two.
The Vocab Lab
Our Learning Circle literacy program, The Vocab Lab, returns in Week 3 after a successful year in 2024. The data shows an improvement in spelling across the year groups involved, and feedback from students suggests they are becoming familiar with core terms for subjects before they encounter them for the first time in the classroom, which is great to hear.
Working with KLAs across the school, we have collated lists of key terms that students need to know - and need to know how to spell! Each word will be defined, or used in a sentence, and the following week students will be quizzed on their spelling. In this way, The Vocab Lab doubles as a vocabulary exercise and spelling test. The aim is to provide cognitive pre-loading of these terms before students encounter them in the classroom.
NAPLAN 2025
Year 7 and Year 9 students at Corpus Christi will be sitting NAPLAN tests online in Week 6 and 7 of this term. The test window runs from Wednesday, March 12 to Monday, March 24.
NAPLAN testing will take place at Corpus Christi as follows:
- Wednesday, March 12 - Writing
- Thursday, March 13 - Reading
- Friday, March 14 - Conventions of Language
- Monday, March 17 - Numeracy
Catch-up tests will take place throughout the remainder of Week 7.
Students will have an information session before the tests and they can also access the NAPLAN Public Demonstration Site to familiarise themselves with the online format.
Please note that all students are required to bring their own earphones for NAPLAN testing.
Stay tuned to the Compass newsfeed for updates. If you have any questions about NAPLAN, feel free to email me at dysonc01@dow.catholic.edu.au
Grammar and Thongs
All students (and parents) have access to the school’s Grammar and Thongs channel on YouTube. The channel features more than 60 flipped learning video lessons. Topics covered include spelling, grammar, punctuation and the origin of words.
The videos can be found on the school’s Literacy Website - https://sites.google.com/dow.catholic.edu.au/literacy/home - and they can also be found on YouTube by searching for “Grammar and Thongs” (feel free to subscribe to my channel).
Students (and parents) are welcome to access these videos whenever they feel the need to brush up on anything to do with grammar!
Students in Year 8, meanwhile, will have a focus on reading comprehension through their English classes, while Year 10 students will complete a program called “Bard Talk”, which tackles the specific literacy demands of studying Shakespeare.
HSC Minumum Standards - Year 10 2025
New minimum standards in literacy and numeracy were introduced in 2018 in NSW for the HSC 2020 and beyond. All students in NSW need to meet this minimum standard by sitting short online tests in reading, writing and numeracy.
The HSC Minimum Standard has been introduced to help ensure students leave school with basic literacy and numeracy skills for success in life, and that students will be able to communicate their ideas effectively in the HSC exams. Regardless of students’ plans beyond school, they will need adequate reading, writing and numeracy skills.
All students will all have the opportunity to sit their HSC exams; however, they will need to demonstrate the new minimum standard in reading, writing and numeracy in order to be awarded their HSC certificate.
For students starting Year 10 in 2025, there will be multiple opportunities to demonstrate the standard between now and when they complete the HSC, starting early in Term 2. The short online tests will take place at school and students will have multiple opportunities a year (if needed) to pass them in Years 10, 11, and 12. Students will also be able to take them for up to five years after starting their first HSC course.
Any students in Year 11 or 12 who are yet to meet the standard will also have an opportunity to sit the tests in Term 2.
For more information, you can visit https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard
There is no specific study required for the tests but if students would like to prepare, they can do the following:
- Go to the Literacy website at https://sites.google.com/dow.catholic.edu.au/literacy/home and search for the videos that address an area they would like to work on.
- Google: “HSC minimum standards sample test questions” or visit: https://www.educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard/online-tests/what-to-expect-in-the-tests/sample-test-questions
Students should stay tuned to Compass towards the end of this term for more information on the HSC Minimum Standards tests.
If you have any questions about anything to do with literacy at Corpus Christi, please feel free to contact me at any time at dysonc01@dow.catholic.edu.au.

Corpus Christi Music 2025 Instrumental Program
We are very excited to be able to offer some amazing opportunities for students here at Corpus Christi, one of them being the Instrumental Program. We are actively seeking new students who would like to learn an instrument at school in 2025.
The lessons take place during class time on the day the tutor is at school (notified on the Compass timetable) and are rotated so students don’t miss the same lessons twice. They are 30 minutes in duration and take place in the music practice rooms. Students then return to their normal classes. Last year, (and continuing this year) lessons were held on a Tuesday however with many of the students returning for lessons this year, another day will more than likely open up.
We have amazing tutors here at Corpus Christi and there have had some major successes with past students. We have active musicians in a number of Aria Nominated bands including award winners, many students have gone on to be involved in the Entertainment fields of recording, film and television composing, concert and festival organisation and studio musicians. In 2023, four of our Yr 12 students were awarded a Band 6 for their HSC music performances including one who received an Encore nomination for outstanding HSC presentations. Many of these students started learning their instruments with the tutors in the Instrumental Program and it’s wonderful to celebrate their successes.
Fees for the instrumental Program are $40 for a private, 30 minute lesson paid directly to the tutor. This is a very reasonable rate and much lower than many private tutors and the Conservatorium of Music are charging.
For more information on learning DRUMS, GUITAR (Electric and Acoustic) and BASS please drop me an email at lappanj01@dow.catholic.edu.au and I will organise an introduction to the tutor and send an EOI form.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to another sporting year at Corpus Christi High School. My aim for 2025 is to continue to promote sport and physical activity as a positive lifestyle choice and to continue to strive for success with our representative sporting teams.
I will be in regular contact with parents for all things sport-related via the school newsletter and Compass News feed and I also urge all students to ensure they regularly check their emails and Compass notifications for updates on opportunities regarding school sports teams. Compass is the main form of communication with students about sport, so it is important that each morning students are checking it so they do not miss out on trialing for a sports team.
On the Compass Newsfeed you will find the following two documents:
- 2025 Sporting opportunities document. There are many sporting opportunities students are able to get involved in in 2025. Students can now see the “2025 Sporting opportunities” document with all of the sports available to trial for as well as the sign up sheet for the majority of the teams (parents/caregivers can't sign up to trial for a team on behalf of their child). This has been posted to students' compass.
There are a few sports that I do not have the link for yet (these are teams where students need to apply to trial through the Wollongong Diocese). Once I receive these links I will be updating the document so please keep checking it for updates.
- Pinned on the Compass page is the 2025 Sports Flyer. This document is an overview of the 2025 sporting opportunities document. The flyer contains the following information:
- Diocesan Sports
- Individual Pathway Sport
- External School entered competitions
- How to register to trial for a Corpus team
- Updated Elite Sportsperson Policy
This will be your first point of call for any information about sport at Corpus. If you have any other questions please contact me via: hawkesbyk01@dow.cathlic.edu.au
