Dear Parents/ Guardians
Welcome Back to Term 3
The students return to the classroom this term as the world continues to look on as war rages in Gaza and Ukraine. Pope Leo has made several public comments about ceasing the barbarity of war and the impact on defenceless civilians. We pray that world leaders will act.
The next eight weeks will be the last ones full of learning for our Year 12 students. The positivity and shared sense of care is clearly visible in so many of these students as they go about preparing for a future that is still unclear for some and more defined for others.
Term 3 in a school’s life is always one where mixed emotion’s exist. The sadness at seeing the graduating class (leaders of the school) come to an end of their formal schooling and leaving the community, is mixed with the excitement of welcoming new school leaders for the 2025 school year. Both our Year 11 group and our Year 12 group are wonderful students who have demonstrated a capacity to do very well.
We wish our Year 12 students all the very best for the trial HSC Exams that commence next week and we are confident that they will present their best selves in these exams. These exams are the major preparatory opportunity for the Year 12 students to experience HSC conditions and timings. So, it is important to engage in them fully.
Parent Teacher Student Led Interviews
It was so very good to meet and chat to the parents who attended these interviews. They are so important for the learning of your child, to access teachers and have a conversation about current learning and ways to improve learning outcomes. A goal that both parents and teachers want.
However, it was disappointing that only about 40% of Year 7 – 10 students booked interviews. Research tells us that parents who take an interest in their child’s learning, leads to improved learning outcomes for the student. We all know that school is different to when we attended. So doing the work with/for your child is not what is needed. However, a genuine interest in performance and support in improvement leads to improved learning, focus in the classroom and behavioural outcomes.
Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop – August 8
Mary MacKillop was born in 1842 in Fitzroy, Melbourne. On 8 August 1909, she died, having suffered a disabling stroke in 1902. Inspired by a meeting with Fr. Julian Tenison-Woods, Mary MacKillop took her vows at the age of twenty-five, and the religious name, “Mary of the Cross”. In doing so, she founded the congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Soon after taking her religious vows, Mary MacKillop founded several schools. Within five years of taking her vows and founding the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Mary had established over thirty schools in South Australia. By that time, more than one hundred women had joined the Order.
Mary was very conscious of the plight of the poor and needy. She worked with families that lived in isolated areas of Australia. As a result, Mary MacKillop pioneered a new form of religious life in Australia, and commenced a “system” of “Josephite” schools that would provide education, especially for the children of the poor. In 1873, Pope Pius IX gave Papal approval for the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
Even today, many Australians can say that they too have felt the impact of the enormous work started by St. Mary of the Cross (MacKillop), having been educated or cared for, by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. She was noted for her trust in the providence of God and miracles of healing have been attributed to her. She was declared a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI on the 17th October 2010, with over 8000 Australians travelling to Rome for the occasion. In January 2013, St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop) was declared by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, to be the Second Patron Saint of Australia. This means that Australia now has two Patron Saints: Mary Help of Christians and St. Mary of the Cross (MacKillop).
God bless

A Worthwhile Resource eSafety Commissioner
An essential resource for navigating the complexities of the online world is the eSafety Commissioner. As a school, we're committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for our students, and this extends to their digital interactions.
The eSafety Commissioner is Australia's independent regulator for online safety, playing a crucial role in safeguarding individuals from various online harms. Their core mission is twofold: to educate Australians about the ever-evolving landscape of online safety risks and to facilitate the removal of harmful online content. This encompasses serious issues such as cyberbullying targeting children, adult cyber abuse, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images or videos.
In an increasingly digital age, it's imperative that parents and carers are equipped with the knowledge and tools to guide their children safely through online environments. eSafety provides a wealth of information and practical advice tailored specifically for families.
We highly recommend that you explore the comprehensive resources available on their website. The dedicated section for parents and carers, accessible directly at https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents, offers invaluable insights. You will find information on understanding various online threats, including cyberbullying, online grooming, and exposure to inappropriate content. There's also guidance on setting up safe online environments through privacy settings, parental controls, and managing screen time. The site provides advice on how to initiate open and effective conversations about online safety with your children, along with clear steps on how to report cyberbullying, abuse, or other harmful material that your child may encounter.
We encourage you to familiarise yourselves with these resources and integrate their advice into your family's approach to online safety. Should you have any concerns regarding your child's online experiences, please don't hesitate to contact the school. We're here to support you and work collaboratively to ensure the well-being of our students.

Mission News
As we return to Semester Two, it is great to be back in our community after our mid-year break. There is much happening during Term 3, including several initiatives in Catholic Studies classes, as well as Mission initiatives and the Diocesan LIVE Festival. I encourage all students to look at how they can ‘connect to the vine’ and immerse themselves in the opportunities in the Mission area.
Remembering Father David Catterall
This week, we remember with love and gratitude Fr David — a much-loved priest, mentor, and friend of our community.
Fr David had a way of making people feel seen. He welcomed others with warmth, spoke with wisdom, and led with quiet strength. He walked gently through our lives, offering laughter, encouragement, and deep faith.
Even in his illness, Fr David remained courageous and kind. He taught us how to trust God in all seasons — with peace, humility, and hope.
His passing leaves a space in our hearts. But the way he lived continues to guide us — in our faith, in our service, and in our love for one another.
We give thanks for Fr David’s life.
We pray for those who grieve.
And we trust that he now rests in the embrace of the God he served so faithfully.
Grandparents Day
We gather to celebrate and honour the special role our grandparents play in our lives. They are our storytellers, our encouragers, and our role models: offering unconditional love and life lessons that shape who we are. On this Grandparents Day, we take a moment to recognise their presence, their sacrifices, and the lasting legacy they leave in our families and communities. Let us now offer a prayer of gratitude for them.
Heavenly Father,
We give thanks today for the gift of our grandparents. Their love, wisdom, and guidance have been a source of strength and inspiration. Bless them with good health, joy, and peace. May their lives be filled with the same love and warmth they have given us.
Help us to honour and cherish them, recognising the profound impact they have had on our lives. May we always remember their sacrifices and the lessons they have taught us.
Grant them comfort and grace, and may our actions reflect our gratitude and appreciation for their enduring support and love.

During the holidays, Tahanni Kaufusi and Halle Barrett represented the NSWCCC Team at the Australian Rugby League Championships in Coffs Harbour.
They kicked off the tournament with a strong 36–4 win over WA, followed by another solid performance, defeating ACT Girls 30–6 on Day Two. They then went on to beat NSW CIS 16-12. The team’s final game was against QRSS in the semi final. NSWCCC went down 14-8. The NSWCCC team finished 3rd overall.
Both girls had a fantastic tournament, and we’re especially proud to share that Halle has been selected for the Australian Schoolgirls Team! This is an incredible achievement and a testament to her hard work and talent. Well done, Halle
Ginger Siasat in Year 9 was selected to play for the NSWCCC team at the NSW All Schools in Week 9. Ginger had a great tournament, scoring 8 tries and had a solid defensive game. She was also named players player which put an exclamation mark to her campaign.

Digital Literacy and Limits on Technology
Reducing Screen Time: It’s More than Self-Control
At Corpus Christi, we recognise that digital tools are now integral to learning and everyday life. As such, we're committed to fostering strong digital literacy in our students; equipping them not just to use technology, but to understand, evaluate, and engage with it responsibly. We are working to prepare students for a future where digital literacy is a core skill, and true digital literacy also involves understanding the importance of balance.
Constant connectivity and the expectation of notifications can impact our focus, well-being, and even our ability to think deeply. This is where the concept of "unplugging" becomes vital. It's about intentionally stepping away from screens, allowing time for reflection, face-to-face interactions, and uninterrupted creative thought. Encouraging students to manage their notifications and create tech-free zones helps them develop crucial self-regulation skills. However, this self-control is a lot to ask of students (and adults!) when the technology has been specifically developed to maintain maximum engagement.
There are a number of tools available to students to limit their distractions on both their laptop and phones, including apps such as ‘Screen Time’ on iPhones, or ‘Digital Wellbeing’ on Android devices. On our school Mac laptops we can set ‘modes’ in System Settings that allow us to turn off certain notifications. We know though, that our students have mastered many ‘work arounds’ to these self-imposed limits within their phones. This year I have been trialling a physical device for my own iPhone, called ‘Brick Device’. It is a physical tool available for iPhones that I ‘tap on’ and ‘off’ to turn my smartphone into an old-fashioned ‘Brick’ (an Android model is in development).
The Brick aims to reduce digital distractions by blocking notifications and limiting access to distracting apps on your iPhone. Users can create dedicated categories for concentration, sleep time, or simply being present without constant digital interruptions. For example, students can ‘tap on’ in the morning and leave for school with a phone that can send and receive text messages or phone calls, but not access any site or App that provides a distraction. They are unable to bypass these limits until they are reunited with the physical ‘Brick’ to ‘tap off’. For me personally, I have seen a 70% reduction in my screentime since using the ‘Brick.’ Each household only needs one ‘Brick’ as it can be used across multiple phones. While the ‘Brick’ does have a high initial cost (around $90 + postage), there are discounts for buying multiple devices so if you’re interested, you could pair up with another family and reduce the overall cost.
This is by no means an endorsement of the product, nor a suggestion that families need to buy one but rather a call for families to investigate options to help support their family’s safe and purposeful screen use. Our shared goal is to empower students in developing their digital literacy so they become discerning digital citizens. This means teaching them to harness the power of technology for learning, while also developing the wisdom to know when to step back, critically evaluate digital information, and protect times where screens are not necessary or beneficial.
