Ms Castles’ Year 10 Visual Arts Elective class travelled to Bowral to visit the Ngununggula Gallery and view the exhibition Tender.

This exhibition showcased the work of seven Australian female painters, each responding to the theme of Tender in unique and powerful ways.

Students were lucky enough to be guided through the exhibition by a very knowledgeable gallery educator, who was particularly impressed by their curiosity and thoughtful engagement with the artworks—some of which were quite abstract and challenging to interpret at first glance.

One of the exhibiting artists was Laura Jones, last year’s Archibald Prize winner. Students were excited to see a collection of her work in person, especially after viewing her winning portrait during the Year 9 overnight trip to Sydney.

Following the gallery tour, students participated in a still life drawing workshop led by artist Lily Cummings. This hands-on session was a highlight, giving students valuable time to develop their drawing skills and learn directly from a practicing artist.

A close second to the art itself was—of course—a quick stop at McDonald’s on the way home to refresh and recharge!

A big thank you to the Year 10 Art class for their openness, enthusiasm, and respectful engagement throughout the excursion, and to Ms Thompson and Ms Lewis for coming along and supporting the day.
