Pastoral Care

Mobile Phone Procedures Reminder

The Pastoral Team wish to remind all members of the Corpus Christi community about our mobile phone policy. We are reminding students and parents that if a mobile phone is VISIBLE during the hours of 8:20am - 3:00pm the phone will be confiscated and handed in to the office by that staff member or the student may be asked to hand it in to the office themselves. Students will be able to collect their phone at the end of the school day

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are mobile phones banned in schools?

NSW Government has banned mobile phone use in schools. Teachers are instructed to confiscate visible phones.

Studies have shown that phone use in schools results in

  • Negative impact on wellbeing
  • Decreased academic performance
  • Decreased social interactions
  • Accessing inappropriate material and cyberbullying

What if I need to speak to my child during the day?

Parents are encouraged to contact the school office during the day. The office will pass on your message in a confidential manner i.e. send a private note enclosed in an envelope, or they will arrange for your child to come speak to you on the phones in the office.

What if my child wants to talk to me during the day?

Our office staff understand that there may be times when students are anxious about something or they need to find out something from their parents. Our office staff will arrange for the student to have access to a phone to contact their parents.

My child has a medical condition that requires them to monitor their health on their phone

These students already have support plans in place where their teachers know they are able to check their phone to monitor their health. This will also be the case for students who have been given permission by counsellors/psychologists/pastoral team to access their phone for pastoral reasons.

I need to organise transportation arrangements with my child

Your child will be able to access their phone when the dismissal bell rings at 3:00pm.

My child uses the Compass App to work out where their next class is.

There are a number of different ways that students can access their Compass

  1. Compass Kiosk - students can use their Compass ID card at the Compass Kiosk in the student foyer. All they need to do is scan their card and their updated timetable will be displayed.
  2. As part of our “Ready to Learn” expectations, Learning Advisors encourage students to check their Compass prior to leaving their class so they know where to go for the proceeding lesson.

Can students continue to use their phone to pay at the canteen?

For the remainder of Term Two they can, however from Term Three onwards, students will no longer be able to use their phone at the canteen. We are providing parents with this time to organise other payment methods for their child.

Payment Methods at the canteen

  • Cash
  • Debit Card
  • Online orders via MySchool Connect

I have heard there are some classes that allow for phones to be used for photography or certain apps, is this continuing?

Staff are in the process of finding alternative solutions to this. Students are encouraged to use their laptops if they need to take photos of their work.

Junior students should not be using mobile phones in class or accessing any apps.

Senior students, particularly those in Creative Arts and Technology courses, may need to use their phones for certain tasks, but that will be in discussions with their Learning Advisors, who will set clear guidelines and expectations for appropriate use.
